Vinyl Decking (Duradek)

Duradek is a reinforced vinyl membrane. On the Gulf Coast it is a waterproofing system rather than a finished floor, and that distinction decides everything else on this page.

Up north the membrane is often left exposed and lived on. Here the sun takes it apart, so almost nobody does — since we started installing it, one customer has left a deck bare. Everything else gets tile or decking laid over the top, and the Duradek disappears underneath.

Which means the thing you are buying is the layer you will never see again. That is a good reason to care who installs it.

Where it goes

Over a wood structure with living space underneath: a balcony above a bedroom, a rooftop terrace over a room, stair landings, walkways. The membrane goes on the structure. The finished surface goes on the membrane.

On the coast that middle layer is unforgiving. A slow leak over habitable space stays invisible until it is structural, and by then you are not repairing a deck, you are repairing the room under it.

The surface on top is a separate decision

Because the membrane gets covered, what you walk on is chosen independently — tile, porcelain, or a decking system. We do that half too, which is the reason most of these jobs are one conversation instead of two trades blaming each other at the handover.

The membrane itself is embossed and slip-resistant wet. That matters on the rare deck left exposed, and it is worth knowing it is there, but it is not the part of this you are selecting.

Over an existing deck

Often, yes — where the structure is sound and the slope genuinely moves water to a drain. Slope is the part people skip. A membrane laid over a flat or back-falling deck will hold water perfectly well, and holding water is the one thing you do not want it to do. That gets checked on site before anything is quoted.

Who can install it

SRQ Modern is an authorized Duradek applicator. The membrane is warranted by the manufacturer on condition that it is installed by one, so this is not a credential to skim past — an unauthorized install is an uninsured roof over your bedroom.

Permits

Work over habitable space, or anything touching structure, may need one. We will tell you which category your deck falls into under Bradenton and Sarasota code before you are committed to anything.

Lifespan

Duradek cite over forty years of the system in service, and a deck membrane is generally given ten to twenty years depending on exposure and traffic. Covered, ours is shielded from the UV that ages an exposed deck — which is the other reason nearly every job here ends up with something on top of it.
