Large-format porcelain: what changes past 48 inches
A 24-inch tile and a 126-inch panel are the same material and a completely different trade. Here is what actually changes.

Porcelain panels run from 48 inches up to 126. They are the same fired material as the 12-inch tile in a builder-grade bathroom, and installing them is not the same job in any respect that matters.
Very few crews on the Gulf Coast will take the work on. That is not a marketing line — it is a straightforward consequence of what follows.
The substrate stops being forgiving
A small tile can absorb a certain amount of variation in the floor beneath it, spread across many joints. A panel cannot. Over ten feet of unbroken material, a deviation that would vanish under mosaic becomes a visible dip or a lippage line you can catch with a bare foot.
So the flatness tolerance on the substrate tightens sharply, and the preparation is a larger share of the job than the setting is. Most of the cost difference on a large-format installation is not the panel.
Handling is a crew problem, not a strength problem
A full panel is heavy, but the real constraint is that it flexes. Carried wrong, it snaps — not at the edge where you would expect, but across the middle. Moving one from a pallet to a wall involves a frame, suction cups and more than two people, and the panel is at its most vulnerable in the seconds before it touches adhesive.
What you get for it
Almost no grout. A shower wall that would take forty tiles and eighty feet of grout line takes two panels and one joint. There is less to clean, less to seal, and less to discolour.
Continuous veining. Because panels are printed as a sheet, a slab can be book-matched across a feature wall or run from a countertop up a backsplash and read as one piece of stone.
And a surface with almost no absorption, which in a climate this humid matters more than it sounds.
Where it goes wrong
The two failures worth knowing about are both preventable and both invisible until they are not.
Insufficient adhesive coverage behind the panel leaves voids, and a void under a large panel is where a crack starts. Full coverage on a surface this size takes a deliberate technique, not a notched trowel and optimism.
And movement joints. A large-format installation still needs somewhere to move; leaving them out because the panel layout looks cleaner without them is the most common reason one fails a year later.
