What Shellcrete is, and the three ways it gets finished
Crushed seashell, fine sand and white Portland cement. The mix is the easy part — the finish is where the decision actually is.

Shellcrete is a concrete blend made from crushed seashells, fine sand and white Portland cement. That is the whole recipe, and it is not a secret — what makes one job read as coastal and another read as a grey slab with bits in it is what happens after the pour.
The blend is poured, levelled, and seeded with decorative shell before finishing. Everything that determines how the surface looks and feels happens in the hours after that.
The three finishes
Exposed shell leaves the aggregate proud of the surface. It is the most obviously coastal of the three and the most textured underfoot, which is why it turns up on driveways and entrance steps where grip matters more than gloss.
Honed grinds the surface back to a soft matte. The shell reads as pattern rather than texture, and the plane is flat enough to put furniture on without a rock.
Polished takes it further, to a finish that picks up reflections — a lanai floor under cover will mirror the sliding doors behind it. It is the finish that photographs best and the one that shows a bad pour most clearly, because a polished surface has nowhere to hide a low spot.
Why people choose it over poured concrete or pavers
Three reasons come up over and over, and only one of them is about looks.
It stays cooler underfoot. Pale surfaces reflect rather than store heat, which is the difference between a pool deck you can cross barefoot in August and one you cannot.
It is slip resistant, because shell aggregate breaks up the surface even when it has been honed flat.
And it goes down as one continuous surface, so there are no paver joints to lift, weed, or re-sand every couple of years.
Where the joints go
Control joints are set out before any concrete is placed, not cut in afterwards. On a driveway that means the timber formwork is laid out as a grid across the whole frontage first, so the joint pattern is part of the design rather than a line somebody sawed through it later.
It is worth looking at photographs of a pour in progress before choosing a contractor for this reason alone. The formwork tells you whether the joint layout was designed or improvised.
Can it go over what is already there?
Often, yes — a topping can be applied over a structurally sound existing slab, which is why resurfacing an aging pool deck is usually a smaller job than replacing it. Whether your slab qualifies is a question for someone standing on it, not a question for a web page.
