An enclosed courtyard laid as a diamond grid of Shellcrete slabs set into artificial turf, running to a round spa with a Shellcrete coping ring and a curved planter of succulents over black pebble.
What we did
A small enclosed courtyard, laid as a diamond grid of Shellcrete slabs set into artificial turf and turned forty-five degrees to the walls.
Rotating the grid is not decoration. In a square white courtyard a square grid lines up with every wall and the space reads as exactly its own size; on the diagonal the longest line in the pattern is the diagonal of the room, and it reads larger. The same trick works with tile indoors and costs nothing but setting out.
The round spa gets a Shellcrete coping ring and the planter beside it is a curved wall in the same material over black pebbles, so the hard landscaping is one surface throughout rather than three products meeting.
The result
Honed rather than exposed here, because a courtyard this size holds furniture and a honed plane is flat enough to set a chair on without it rocking. Grip comes from the turf joints breaking up the run.
