Shellcrete pool deck and coping
Sarasota, Florida
A polished pool deck divided into large panels by control joints, with Shellcrete coping mitred at the edge and set dense with whole shells where it meets brick-pattern blue-green mosaic and the water.

The challenge
Coping is the hardest detail on a pool. It is the one edge everybody grabs, kneels on and climbs over, it has to meet the waterline tile cleanly, and it has to be finished for wet feet rather than for the camera.
What we did
The coping was cast off site as precast pieces and set on the shell. The gallery has them laid out on sand before installation — L-shaped profiles with the rebates already cast in, so each piece drops onto the bond beam and over the tile line in one movement.
Casting rather than pouring in place is the decision that makes the mitred edge possible: the top face and the return are cut and closed at the corner, so the edge reads as solid stone. The top face is set dense with whole shells for grip where hands and feet land.
The deck itself is polished and divided into large panels by wide control joints running out from the house toward the water, which keeps a big continuous surface flat and puts the movement where it was planned.
The result
Two finishes on one job, each where it belongs: polished across the sheltered deck where it picks up the reflection of the sliding doors, exposed shell on the coping where grip matters more than gloss.
That split is worth noticing, because it is available on any Shellcrete job. One mix, one pour, the finish varying by what each area is for.
This job is on the pool decks page, in the polished and exposed shell finishes.
